Čuljak — where the name comes from

Prezime · Family name
Čuljak
[ˈt͡ʃuʎak] · Croatian, Catholic

A name from Herzegovina with a clearly identified homeland: “The Čuljak are Croats and come predominantly from Herzegovina — from Klobuk (near Ljubuški).”

Two Interpretations of the Name

There are two competing interpretations of the name’s origin — and both lead, each in its own way, back to stone and the shape of the land.

Interpretation 1 · Toponym

From the summit

From the Dalmatian čulj — “point, peak, summit”. A Čuljak would then be someone who lived up on the heights. This interpretation seems particularly fitting in the shadow of a cone-shaped hill called Klobuk (near Ljubuški).

Interpretation 2 · Nickname

From a physical trait

From the adjective čulav / čuljav — “small-eared or stub-eared”. A nickname that passed from livestock to people, much as many old family names arose from a physical trait.
